1) Visit the local Arts and Crafts workshop - “Layia Village Crafts”
See the ingenious creativity of an amazingly inventive couple. Pete specialises in crafting beautiful objects out of natural olive wood. Lynn is principally an artist.
2) See the place where Cyprus emerged from the sea
Just a few hundred yards from the Kafestiatorion Lagias, in the direction of Ora, one can see in the rocks through which the road was hewn the curved tutonic plates that geologists say crashed into each other under the sea millions of years ago and erupted to form Cyprus.
3) Stroll down the picturesque village to the beautiful old Church
Walk down the street to the church and breathe in the tranquil beauty of this mountain village.
4) Go bird-watching by the river near the church
As you approach the small, but very beautiful country church, you come to a sign that says “Παλαιά Βρύσι (1709)¨ - “Old tap (1709)”. In bygone times villages used to have a communal tap where the inhabitants could obtain drinking water. Walk down towards the river and you will see Lageia’s - one of the most beautifully preserved of such village taps. Continue the path to the river (more of a mountain stream here) and perch yourself in a comfortable spot to observe the numerous bird species that frequent this sanctuary.
5) Visit the nearby abandoned village of Parsata
A short drive from Lageia, you will find the abandoned village of Parsata. As you survey the old stone houses, you may feel that you have stepped back in time. In bygone days the inhabitants used to work the now exhausted copper mines of nearby Kalavasos.
Oh and don’t forget to stop by at the Kafestiatorion Lagias
Here a warm smile, a beer or a ‘Zivania’ await you. “And there is always something nice to eat,” says Bill/Vassilis, the restaurateur.
